This list assumes the reader has completed Martha Is Dead's story. There will be unmarked spoilers past this point.

7 The Entire🐽 Family Is Taki🔴ng Prescription Meth

martha is dead empty pervitin

Giulia finds discarded pill bottles all over the house - she mentions that her mother is abusing a prescription drug called Pervitin. We also see a bottle on Erich's desk and in Martha's trinket box. Even though Irene has a clear problem, the entire family is also taking the pills. If Giulia makes phone calls inquiring about the drug, the family doctor tells her that Pervitin is illegal in Italy and that Erich gets it through the German army.

Pervitin was a real drug developed for commercial sale in Germany in 1938. It was even available without a prescription until 1940 and was distributed heavily to German soldiers during World War II as a stimulant. Pervitin is methamphetamine. Given that context, Irene's outburst and horrific treatment of Giulia make a lot more sense - aggression and irrational behavior are commonly associated with heavy meth use.

6 Don At𒁏tilio Thinks Giulia Is Possessed

martha is dead white lady ritual

Although he never appears onscreen, the family's priest in San Casciano plays an important role in the story. We are first introduced to him when Giulia listens in on a phone call between him and Irene. Don Attilio says he thinks the nanny had something to do with the incident at the lake, even though she is watching the family's main house and is nowhere near the villa. He cites her use of tarot cards - which he views as witchcraft - as the reason for his suspicion.

If you've finished the game, you know that it's very likely Martha never existed at all and Giulia is an only child (though nothing is certain as Giulia proves unable to determine what is real and what isn't). With this in mind, pay attention to Don Attilio's accusation; he claims that the nanny and her tarot cards "hurt" Giulia, not "killed" Giulia. It's common knowledge to the family and their circle that Giulia is deeply mentally ill - since the family would have kept Irene's treatment of Giulia as a child secret from the priest, he sees her condition as a result of trafficking in devil-worship, and the nanny is to blame.

5 The Song That Plays At Lapo's Death

martha is dead lapo partisan corpse

Early in the game, Giulia's childhood friend and love interest Lapo is killed in a fight with German soldiers. As Giulia approaches the body, the song that plays is a slow, mournful rendition of the Italian folk song "Bella Ciao" ("Goodbye Beautiful" in English). The song has origins in the nineteenth century, but is often associated with the anti-fascist partisans who resisted Mussolini's rule in Italy, a movement to which Lapo belonged and ultimately died for.

The original version of the song references insects and mosquitoes (gli insetti e le zanzare), and you can always hear insects buzzing early on the forest path. The adapted version sung by partisan soldiers references flowers for those who died for freedom, and later in the game, Giulia finds a call-to-arms from Lapo's comrades in the flower fields near the villa.

4 Clues To Irene's Abuse Are Present From The Start

martha is dead dog handle

Games with twist endings often have 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:innocuous foreshadowing hidden in plain s𒈔ight. On the evening of Martha's wake, players can explore the parlor to learn more about the family. Photos, letters, and household objects give some startling insight into the dynamics between the central characters. Near the foyer, two of these objects directly reference the childhood abuse Giulia suffered.

While the player doesn't find out what happened until the second puppet theater sequence when Giulia's repressed memories come back, she gets a feeling of sadness at the dog bed and a sense of unease near Erich's cane collection. The camera lingers in particular on a cane with the head of a dog as its handle. During the puppet theater sequence, sharp-eyed players might notice that this is the cane Irene uses to beat Giulia, resulting in her dissociation.

Giulia mentions upon inspecting the dog bed that she can't remember what happened to her first dog. As we later find out, Irene killed and cooked the dog in a fit of rage before forcing little Giulia to eat it.

3 Many Characters Have Identical Ha😼ndwriting

An op🐲tional side quest allows you to use the infrared lens to capture hidden messages on film. These riddles eventually allow you to take ghost photographs of the White Lady. At first, Giulia is skeptical - she wonders if somebody wrote on the film before it was developed. As it turns out, she might have done so herself during a blackout.

The handwriting in the photos is identical to Giulia's handwriting in her diary. It's also identical to Martha's handwriting in the letter she left for Giulia, which makes sense if they are the same person. However, the letter to Irene from the nanny also has the same handwriting. Did Giulia write that letter as well, or is the game recyclingꦐ fonts?

Martha's letter to Irene is written in print rather than cursive, but the handwriting matches Lapo's letter to Giulia. During the final conversation with Giulia's reflection, there is an option to suggest Lapo never existed. If this is the case, then all the handwritten letters in the game were left by Giulia herself!

2 ꧅ Giulia Makes Up Details🧔 About The White Lady Based On Her Own Life

martha is dead white first jump scare

The legend of the White Lady is fairly straightforward, and Giulia's obsession with the story is a driving force behind many of her actions. Although the White Lady is scary enough to compete with the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:ghosts of other haunting games, she is probably just a figment of Giulia's imagination.

If you capture and develop ghostly images of the Lady with the infrared lens, Giulia talks about details that were never mentioned in the storybook at the beginning of the game. It's never mentioned, for example, that the White Lady and the man who eventually killed her had an illicit relationship, but Giulia's headcanon is that they met in secret and that the White Lady took to praying in the woods because she was too ashamed to talk to her priest. Given Giulia's relationship with Lapo and the obvious guilt she feels about it, it seems like Giulia is projecting her own story onto that of the White Lady.

Giulia also mentions that the White Lady's house - the ruins in the forest - was "a place of suffering" and that she took refuge at the site where the villa now stands. The main house of Giulia's family, which we never see, was where she suffered at the hands of Irene and her only fond memories are of her time at the villa with her nanny. The White Lady's apparition even appears outside the window of Giulia's childhood bedroom.

To top it all off, when Giulia summons the White Lady via the tarot cards, all of the spirit's responses line up with what Giulia was already expecting to hear... not to mention that the White Lady is voiced by the same actress as Giulia in every language. For Giulia, the legend of the White Lady is pure escapism.

1 There's A Major Hint Just Before The Funeral

martha is dead church sign

The chapel on the villa's grounds is only accessible once, on the day of Martha's funeral. Giulia stops by before the service for time alone with her sister. It's an emotional scene, and though there are a few objects to inspect inside the building, there's one massive clue hanging innocently on the wall.

Near the death certificate is a line from the Biblical book of Acts - "cor unum et anima una." This is Latin for "one heart and one soul" ✨which is💟 a sneaky way of hinting that Martha and Giulia are one and the same.
