With Dragon Ball Super among us, as well as the commercial success of Dragon Ball spin-off gaming series such as Dragon Ball Heroes, Xenoverse, and Fusions, there is no shortage of content for even the most hardcore Dragon Ball fan. That being said, I wanted to look back at one of 🌳the more interesting, yet barely ut😼ilized fusion form of Goten and Trunks known as Gotenks.
While this character did receive a fair amount of attention in the final arc of the Dragon Ball Z series, Gotenks became not much more than comedic fodder for most of its main appearances. Even his appearances in Dragon Ball Super relegated this once powerful fusion into a useless weakling, much to the same vein as Hercule. With the Majin Buu Saga probably being my least favor arc of the entire Dragon Ball Z, Gotenkꦛs seemed lꦺike one of the bright spots in a rather dreary conclusion to an otherwise legendary series.
Still, the character has found new life in other forms of Dragon Ball-related fiction such as a brand-new and pretty awesome adult version called Xeno Gotenks, featuring the amazing fusion of Time Patrollers Trunks and Goten. It seems like only justice that there is an article dedicated to Gotenks filled with fifteen facts and tidbits, mixed with well-known and forgotten trivia, just in case he ever makes his way back to the Dragon Ball Super series as a true powerhouse. Fingers crossed.
15 Gotenks All Grown Up! 💝
For fans who wanted transformations and characters who were never introduced in the main episodic series, the spinoff titles of Dragon Ball Heroes, Dragon Ball Fusions, and Dragon Ball Xenoverse are just the ticket. Though they are not entirely canon, it does allow fans to play as hypothetical characters and transformations that were only dreamed of in fan-fictions and online forums. Also, they are done by the minds who worked on the main series, so there's a sense of credibility there. Thanks to Dragon Ball Heroes, an adult version of Gotenks finally exists in the formℱ of Xeno Gotenks. He also comes armed with a sword. How cool is that?
14 No Tails Abou♚t It
There is more to Akira Toriyama's life than just the Dragon Ball series, but it has certainly netted quite an income for the once-struggling artist. Still, even creators of great franchises tend to forget little details here and there. Just ask George Lucas. I am pretty sure he cannot be in public anymore without a geek asking him about discrepancies found in the Star Wars universe. In a recent unnamed interview, Toriyama admitted that he even forgot about the various Super Saiyan forms. Furthermore, he also quipped that it was somewhat of an irritation to draw the tails coming out of the various pants, so he just got rid of them all together. Neither Goten nor Trunks had their tails removed in the storyline. Therefore, it is very possible that the t💙ail still exists on Gotenks, but hiding underneath clothing.
13 The Most Powe♒rful
In Daizenshuu 7, Gotenks is stated in the guidebook as being the most powerful warrior that was still alive in the Majin Buu Saga at the point he comes out of training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, surpassing even Vegeta's power level at the time. However, this moment is extremely short-lived as Gotenks is quickly outclassed by the growing transformations of the villainous Buu. With the death of Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan, Gotenks is considered the most powerful Z-Fighter alive, but that isn't really saying much. As of Dragon Ball Super, Gotenks is not even capable 🅰of battling Vegeta in his base-form after the latter attained the Super Saiyan God designation.
12 🔴 A Ford Fusion
A chance pairing of automaker Ford and Dragon Ball Z finally created the greatest fusion, yet. In an advertising campaign between the two biggest names in the world, a successful Fusion Dance between Goten and Trunks actually created the Ford Fusion rather 🐠than the typical Gotenks. The Ford Fusion is one of the flagship cars in Ford's lineup, known around the world previously as the Ford Mondeo. According to the commercial, this new Fusion boasts a stylish exterior and is built like a true warrior. Master Roshi ends up call♏ing shotgun, but I really hope that Piccolo doesn't end up driving. You know exactly why.
11 ▨ The Super Saiyan 2 Skip
While he does appear to achieve Super Saiyan 2 in his transition to Super Saiyan 3, Gotenks never actually spends any meaningful time in his Super Saiyan 2 form. Before Goku is capable to achieve Super Saiyan form in his reborn youth form in Dragon Ball GT, Trunks and Goten are probably the youngest individuals to ever achieve a Super Saiyan transformation in canon up until that point. Also, there is a battle between two very powerful descendants of Goku and Vegeta sparring with each other at the end of Dragon Ball GT. Notably, Xeno Gotenks does receive some Super Saiyan 2 treatment thanks to Dragon Ball Heroes.
10 Dragon Ball: ♒Ultimate Battl🦹e 22
Gotenks's first video game appearance comes in the 1990s game Dragon Ball: Ultimate Battle 22 that is a part of Dragon Ball's long line of Butoden titles. The 22 in the title actually refers to a number of playable characters in the game rather than its numbering in the series. After unlocking the five secret characters, the title morphs to Ultimate Battle 27. Originally released in 1995 in Japan, it was inexplicably released nearly eight years later in the United States, and was universally panned with Electronic Gaming Monthly describing the game as: “someone crapped in a jewel case and passed it off as a game.” Out of the mouths of babeꩵs.
9 The God Of Destไruction ♈
Before its prevalence in Dragon Ball Super, particularly with the introduction of Beerus and Whis, the terminology of God of Destruction was used by several extremely powerful entities in the Dragon Ball universe. Gotenks actually refers to himself as such in the video game Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors. In addition to Gotenks, every main villain in the Dragon Ball Z series has been referred to as a God of Destruction at one point or another, as well as Syn Shenron in Dragon Ball GT and Brol𝓡y and Future Warrior in various Dragon Ball-related video games. It is unlikely that the terminology actually has the same connotation as it does now.
8 The Other Gotenks ﷽
Until there is a Potara version of Goten and Trunks's fusion called Truten or something, this special very Gotenks remains as the alternative version to the original canonical one. Exclusive to the Dragon Ball Fusions game, EX Gotenks is the combined EX-form of Gote🌜n and Trunks through the usage of Metamo-Rings while performing the Fusion Dance. EX-fusions are in their nature weaker than a regular Fusion Dance-created fusion, but has the added🔜 advantage of being able to only defuse through the removal of the Metamo-Ring. Hypothetical, the fusion could remain indefinitely. Like with all spinoff series, the EX Gotenks character is not canon under the main episodic storyline. Still, it gives creators a lot of merchandising and plot opportunities.
7 The One Canonical Fusion Dance ♊
Gotenks is the result of the only time a Fusion Dance was performed successfully in the episodic Dragon Ball Z. That being said, feature films such as Fusion Reborn, which featured an appearance of Gogeta (Goku and Vegeta's Fusion Dance form), is usually not regarded to the same level as the series. Thus, the canonical value of the films is often up for debate. The idea of Fusion Dance is also mentioned in the sequel series Dragon Ball GT, where the most powerful fused being came in the form of Gogeta with a Super Saiyan 4 transformation🐈. It is up to speculation whether or not any GT-related💯 fiction could be regarded as canon at this point, especially with Super drawing so much fan attention. All of that being said, Gotenks remains as the one successful Fusion Dance in the main series.
6 No GT Fo🌌r Gotenks
If you somehow forgot about Gotenks in the sequel of Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, it is because the fusion never actually took place. But it was mentioned during a dialogue between Goten and Trunks, where the two Saiyan-Human hybrids suggest that they fuse to combat Golden Great Ape Baby only to have Goku to respond that even Gotenks would be no match for the villain's advanced power. It wasn't until spinoff fiction like Dragon Ball Heroes and Xenoverse that an adult☂ version of Gotenks was introduced to fans. I guess GT didn't stand for GoTenks
