Your Fishing Rod and bait will stay equipped when you are doing other tasks, you'll just need to swap back to them when you're ready to fish again with CTRL+F.

After casting, a fish will be lured to hook very shortly. Once hooked, you'll be prompted to press Q to reduce the amount of time needed to reel the catch in.
