Do you remember the flood of Tiger Electronics handhelds in the 90s that were based on any remotely popular property? For some ungodly reason, those little LCD systems are set to make a comeback. Toy manufacturer Hasbro announced today that it would be re-releasing a number of Tiger Electronics handhelds in the near future. Going for $14.99 each, these new versions will likely use updated c⛎omponents that help combat the terrible quality of the originals.
Much like the original versions, these handhelds will house a single game with dedicated buttons and artwork. The initial lineup of tiles will include Sonic The Hedgehog 3, X-Men Project X, Transformers: Generation 2, and The Little Mermaid. The units will run on two AA batteries and will be housed in shells that rese🔥mble their 90s counterparts.
The prevalence of these toys in the 90s was down to how lackadaisical IP holders were in the era. Marvel had an insanely low licensing cost and it was simple for toy manufacturers to acquire the rights for products based on upcoming blockbusters. That's why there were numerous Tiger Electronics games based on Jurassic Park, Street Fighter, and more.
If you're dying to get some of that nostalgia going, all four of these units are available for pre-order on GameStop. You can find Sonic , X-Men , Transformers , and The Little Mermaid . It stands to reason that if t🦹hese somehow become successful again, Hasbro will release more in a second wave.
As a child of the 90s, I absolutely remember these🎃꧋ dreaded handhelds. Before Nintendo made the Game Boy a household name, these toys were the closest thing kids had to get portable gaming going. It's so funny looking back now that we have a system like the Switch, but handheld technology has definitely come a long way.
I'm sure these well sell based on nostalgia alone. I don't think anyone has actual fond memories of the Tiger Electronics brand, but I can't blame people if they did. What other options were there ꦉbefore the information age? It was either you played games a⛄t home or you actually went outside. Who the hell wants to go outside?
