Throughout the game, there was no doubt chemistry between Lara and Sam, sparking inspiration for what a romance between them could be like. So while Sam failed to appear in the game's sequels, much to the disappointment of fans, she did pop up in other mediums like the Tomb Raider comics.
Comic book writer Gail Simone tweeted in regards to the 2013 game saying "You cannot convince me that Lara and Sam aren’t 10000% gay for each other. It’s not even subtext." Writer, , responded saying an entire issue in Inferno was originally dedicated to Lara finally understanding heꦚr true feelings for Sam.
"Gail, we tried so hard to make it canon," Lanzing said. "We had an entire issue in TR: INFERNO dedicated to Lara going through a toxic drug trip and finally, fully understanding her feelings for Sam. By the time it went to publishing, their culminating kiss hꦑad become a friendly hug."
Comic book artist Phillip Sevy also confirmed that the original ending to the issue featured a kiss between Lara and Sam. "I still have the original pencils/inks fo🍷r that page before I had to redraw it," he said.
