Video games aren't just known for their adventure-seeking heroes but also the antagonists these heroes face. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tomb Raider is certainly no exception to this rule, possibly even going a step further by bringing some of them back once more. Tomb Raider's villains are just about as well-thought-out and realized as Lara herself.

But for a franchise with 12 main entries and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:some titles you've probably never heard of, there are bound to be some duds in the franchise's portfolio. Whether due to time limitations or a misguided concept, not all can be hits. But which ones are?

Updated February 22, 2022, by Nico Dagny: It seems every person out there has a quarrel with Lara, which is why so many villains exist in the Tomb Raider universe. But some of these portrayals aren't nearly as good as the rest. In fact, some games might've been better off without the main antagonist or at the least someone with a bit more depth. Here's our updated ranking.

12 𒀰 Xolotl - Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light

Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light. Cutscene of Lara and Xolotl.

Not as many people played Guardian Of Light compared to the mainline entries, so the villain Xolotl isn't as well known. He has the typical baddie motive down, with a need to plunge the world into darkness (as per the real original Xolotl), and of course, Lara isn't about to let that happen. With the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:help of the Guardian Of Light, Lara defeats the men sent by Xolotl, eventually catching up to the aforementioned villain.

He doesn't really do much else and isn't nearly as intimidating as other villains in the franchise. This is a shame since the game he belongs to isn't all that bad.

11 𓃲 Mar👍k Willard - Tomb Raider 3

Tomb Raider 3 Mark Willard boss.

While intimidating (especially to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:those with arachnophobia), Mark Willard is an incredibly dull antagonist who does little to stand out. We don't see much of him until the end of the game, where it's revealed that the stones he hired Lara to search for can hasten evolution on a global scale. Disgusted by this realization, Lara takes the artifacts back, foiling Willard's plan.

While not necessarily a terrible antagonist in the grand scope of things, what brings Willard down is the lack of interest that comes with the boring story of the character. He just feels like a bland stain on the list of Tomb Raider's incredibly varied, engaging antagonists.

10 Dragon - Tomb Raider 2 𒊎

Tomb Raider 2 Dragon. Lara fighting dragon in a boss fight.

The dragon is one of the most iconic bosses in Tomb Raider's history but unfortunately misses the mark of being a decent villain. Before even becoming the dragon, the leader of the Fiamma Nera cult, Marco Bartoli, stabs himself with the Dagger of Xian. Thinking him dead, Lara attempts to retrieve the dagger from his corpse, only to be met with the dragon as Bartoli transforms.

The reveal is not nearly as cool, nor is the boss as difficult as players would assume it to be. As a result, many will leave the fight wondering if that's really it (thankfully, this isn't the case with the Home Sweet Home level, though it is the last true boss of the game).

9 Pedro Dominguez - Shadow Of The Tomb Raider ⛄

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider villain cutscene.

Being the leader of Trinity is a tough ask, especially when you know Lara Croft will likely be 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:mere steps ahead. The villain of Shadow Of The Tomb Raider is this very same leader, one who crosses moral lines to look out for his people. Unfortunately, everything goes downhill from here as Lara just so happens to bring upon the apocalypse by taking the dagger of Chak Chel💧.

The game devolves into what's essentially a race between Dominguez and Lara as to who can recover the box of Ix Chel and either restore the sun or remake the world. The latter being Dominguez's intention. The concept of a morally gray villain is fantastic, but the execution is underwhelming, with Dominguez often appearing as a one-note character.

8 ཧ Ana - Rise Of The Tomb Raider

Rise Of The Tomb Raider Ana and Lara have been captured.

Working as a dual antagonist alongside Konstantin, Ana plays a significant role in why Konstantin is so motivated to go after the Divine Source. Suffering from some type of terminal illness, Ana has a clear motive for recovering the Divine Source, believing it will cure her. When Ana eventually happens upon the Source, she attempts to heal herself but fails when the Source begins to absorb her soul.

With Ana distracted, Lara destroys the Source, where Trinity then spares her. The story of Ana is one you can sympathize with though unfortunately, she doesn't quite make the impact the developers hoped she would.

7 🦄 💛 Konstantin - Rise Of The Tomb Raider

Rise Of The Tomb Raider Konstantin talking to Ana.

Konstantin works for the organization halting Lara at every turn in Rise of the Tomb Raider; Trinity. He has a good reason for this, as his affiliation with Trinity is the only hope his sister Ana has left. While he believes God chose him to undertake a holy mission, it was actually Ana who pushed him to work with Trinity.

Konstantin was one of the special ones. As a brother trying to look out for his sister, you can understand why he would go to such drastic lengths, which is relatively new for an antagonist here. He's still a bad guy, but you can feel for him, making having to go against him emotionally tricky.

6 💖 Doppelgänger - Tomb Raider: Legend

Tomb Raider: Legend, Lara and her Doppelganger talking.

Unlike other characters on this list who had a semblance of choice as to the side taken with Lara, her Doppelgänger never had this luxury. Near the end of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tomb Raider: Legend, all is revealed how the Doppelgänger has been under Natla's control this entire time. Once Lara discovers the words used to control her sort-of twin, she frees her of Natla's control with one final request. "Make sure Natla suffers."

The fate of the Doppelgänger is never revealed, but we can assume that she's out there somewhere, hopefully living a better life. Because of this unorthodox approach taken to the antagonist, she becomes a hero alongside Lara by the end of the game. One, we would love to see the return of in a future installment.

5 🌱 Joachim♔ Karel - Tomb Raider: The Angel Of Darkness

Tomb Raider: Angel Of Darkness. Karel talking to Lara in a cutscene.

Joachim Karel, or just Karel as Lara addresses him, was the hidden hand present throughout all the events in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tomb Raider: The Angel Of Darkness. His true form was revealed at the end of the game that he is part of the Nephilim Race, an ancient hybrid between humans and angels said to be cursed. Karel is a shape-shifter that took many faces familiar to Lara on🌄 her journey.

Unlike Willard, Karel's reveal by the end is done well, as we watch Karel from the very beginning but don't know it, making the ending far more enthralling.

4 Ma♌thias - Tomb Raider 2013

Tomb Raider 2013 villain Mathias cutscene.

The 2013 reboot brought with it many characters. However, one of the more interesting ones was Mathias, who was the leader of the Solarii brotherhood on the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:island of Yamatai. Matthias stirs up all kinds of trouble foꦗr Lara and her friends as the Solarii attempts to resurrect Queen Himiko, an ancient queen of the land rumored to have the power to summon storms.

Although Himiko is usually labeled as the main villain of the reboot, she isn't nearly as prominent as Mathias, who shows up frequently through the game to make life harder for Lara. Mathias is one hell of a villain, taking the classic cult leader to another level as the character's intimidation brings up the ever-present fear throughout the game.

3 ꦆ Set - Tomb Raider 4💎, Temple Of Osiris

Set villain Temple Of Osiris and Tomb Raider 4.

After removing the ankh responsible for imprisoning Set, keeping him at bay from destroying the world, and remaking it as his own, Lara goes on a quest throughout Egypt to get him back to his prison. Unlike previous entries, this antagonist is not and never was human, but rather divine, making him one of the biggest baddies Lara has ever had to take on.

While the combat section with Set was lackluster, his entire place in the franchise𒁃 and wi🏅thin Tomb Raider 4 was riveting and felt like a step-up from the enemies Lara faced prior. Set also appears in Temple Of Osiris, albeit with less screen time, though he is effective in both games.
