That's at least what its developer Oskar Stålberg declares, calling it "an experimental passion project. More of a toy than a game... No goal. No real gameplay. Just plenty of building and plenty of beauty. That's it."
So of course, simplicity is the order of the day in Townscaper. And it truly is beautiful in this simplicity. All you have placed in front of you is a calm oceanscape that stretches out as far as the eye can see in all directions, a simple pastel color palette to the left, and your mouse cursor. The goal - to build a complete town - seems optional; you could also consider the goal to be the simple act of clicking and dragging your way around the space in front of you and watching in peaceful awe as ༒pleasing little buildings of all shapes and sizes pop into existence.
Pick colors from the palette, plop down colored blocks of house on the irregular grid, and watch Townscaper's underlying algorithm automatically turn those blocks into cute little houses, arches, stairways, bridges and lush backyards, depending on their co൲nfiguration.
The satisfaction factor is probably this toy's biggest selling point, enhanced that much more by the charming pops, plops, and splishy-splashy sounds that accompany the💧 placement of each building block.
