Twitch will join forces with Cxmmunity to develop an espor💧ts league for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The goal is to provide students at HBCUs scholarships and educational support through the Twitch Student program as well as to help the schools expand esports programs.
Cxmmunity, a nonprofit organization that seeks to increase the participation of minorities within the esports and video game industry to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:create equal opportunities for new jobs and professions, was co-founded by Chris Peay, a graduate of an HBCU, who says he knows firsthand about the lack of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:representation in the gaming industry.
HBCUs are institutions of higher learning that were founded before the🌳 Civil Rights Act of 1964 to serve the African-American community. There are 101 HBCUs in the United States, including Spelman College, Howard University, Morehouse College, North Carolina A&T State University, Florida A&M University and Tuskegee University.
More than 200 colleges in the United States have esports teams or clubs associated with Tespa, the National Association of Collegiate Esports, and Collegiate Star League, according ღto a statement from Twitch. Only one of those colleges though is an HBCU: Morehouse Co🐽llege in Atlanta.
Peay says that although minority youth are encouraged to get good grades, graduate from college and find a good job, there is little discussion about entrepreneurship, especially within the esports and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:video game industry.
The International Game Developers Association reports that 83% of Black teens play video games compared to 71% of white teens. On the other hand, 68% o♒f game developers are white, compared to 14% of creators who are Black or Latinx. The new program strives to create a pipeline of Black talent so that more people of color can access jobs within the video game and esports industry.
Twitch will showcase the HBCU league on Sunday, August 2, at 3 pm, on the Cxmmunity Twitch channel Twitch.Tv/cxmmunityco. Gi꧃ven the need to increase representation in all areas of the entertainment 🔜industry, the HBCU league is a good first step in the right direction.
