Dataminers have gone through the files of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (via. ) and discoveꦅred that there are placeholder files for the "How To Play" section of the game that point to the return of the Home-Run Contest and Stage Builder Mode⛦s in the future.
The Home-Run Contest was a mode introduced in Super Smash Bros. Melee that involved the player hitting the Sandbag item as hard as possible in order to make it travel as far as they could. The Stage Builder mode allowed players to create their own levels using pre-made asse𒁃ts.
It isn't too surprising to see the Home-Run Contest mode return, as most of the elements for it are already in the game. It's possible that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was planned to feature the mode at launch, but the strict 2018 holiday season deadline forced the developers to add it at a later date. The return of Stage Builder is more of a surprise as it was never a popular mode and it was likely a lot of work to complete. Custom stages are usually only played by people who enjoy Smash Bros. as a casual or party game, as there are strict rules regarding the use of stages in organized play, and levelsꦐ designed by the players would never be considered legal for tournaments.
If the datamine is correct and these modes are coming back, then it also leaves the door open for other removed modes to return in later updates, such as Target Smash or Boss Battles. The fact that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released so early in the lifespan of the Nintendo Switch means that🍒 we could be receiving new content for years to come.
The 3.0 update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is due to arrive in spring.
