It seems that fate doesn't want to give Tom Holland a break, as the upcoming movie based on the Uncharted video games has lost its fifth director.
The Uncharted franchise has always seemed tailor-made for a movie adaptation, but it has been buried so deep in different levels of development hell that even Dante couldn't find it. The first Uncharted movie was announced back in 2008, with Nathan✤ Fillion petitioning hard for the role of Nathan Drake. The first director to take the chair was David O'Russell, but he was later replaced by Neil Burger, who was followed by Seth Gordon, who was then followed by Shawn Levy.
It seemed as if the Uncharted movie was good to go, as Dan Trachtenberg was set to direct with Tom Holland taking the role of a young version of Nathan Drake. It seems that Spider-Man will be going it alone, as is reporting that Trachtenberg has exited the Uncharted movie.
There was no reason given as for Trachtenberg's departure from the Uncharted project, but it has been reported that Tom Holland is still attached to star in the movie and that Sony is hard at work at finding his replacement. The production of Uncharted is still expected to begin in 2020.
The news of the Uncharted movie is the second piece of bad news that Tom Holland has received this week, following the uncertainty regarding Spider-Man's place in the MCU. Spider-Man was one of the biggest remaining names in the MCU following the events of Avengers: Endgame, but it seems as if he is෴ going to be retconned out and never✃ mentioned again.
The Uncharted movie seems like the perfect project for a live-action adaptation, as it's one of Sony's most popular video game franchises and it would essentially be a modern action movie in the style of Indiana Jones. If the Tomb Raider series can receive several live-action adaptations, there is no reason why an Uncharted movie cannot be made.
