A group of friends once met up at a lodge in the mountains, and two of them mysteriously disappeared. A year later, the rest of the group meets there again, and this is when most of the game takes place. The area is clearly haunted by something, and you play as different characters as you piece together what happened back then and what’s still going on in the🍸 present. I wouldn’t consider that a groundbreaking narrative, but the game was indeed still scary to play. Between haunting images, jump scares, and general tension as you progress through certain areas, it was an all-around solid experience for a horror game.
However, what makes the game truly stand out for me is the gameplay. I🍷n Reside♑nt Evil Village, I had to deal with panicking about everything that terrified me and about my skills (or lack thereof) with the gameplay. Considering I’m already at the edge of my seat on high alert 𒉰from the horror elements, trying to focus on collecting resources, aiming properly while shooting, and not getting hit by things proved to be an impossible task for me. I couldn’t really enjoy the cool, creepy parts of the game that I was supposed to love, because I was too overwhelmed by trying to do everything else correctly.
Until Dawn utilizes much simpler gameplay, and this allowed me to achieve—what I will call—the appropriate amount of anxiety for a horror game. Instead of having to aim and shoot, prompts to push specific buttons at a given time would pop up on screen. For example, if you’re sprinting away from a monster, you might quickly need to tap the “x” button to jump over a log or the square button to duck under a branch. While this still obviously involves a fair bit of pressure, it’s quite comforting to know that the only thing I must do is quickly push one button at a time. Knowing I didn’t have to try to manage a bunch of other gameplay elements a💎llowed me to focus on the interesting aspects of the game, and not what kind of acrobatics I might need to pull off at any given moment.
The simplicity of the game mechanics combines with the horror elements to make Until Dawn the perfect horror game setup for someone interested in the genre who becomes overwhelmed easily. I haven’t played another horror ga💙me that captures this balance so perfectly.
