The game lets you create your voxelated utopia any way you like, but smart gameplay will lead to happy citizens, a strong production chain, and a map worthy of first-person exploration. If you're just getting started, follow these tips to make your city a nicer place to live.

Housing Is Key

It wouldn't be much of a city if there were nowhere for people to live! Housing is the very first thing you'll build on any map, and the evolution of each residential area will have a dramatic impact on your game. There are dozens 💃of housing types in Urbek, and each produces and consumes a different set of resources.

The primary factors that determine a housing block's type are the available jobs and services nearby; houses near industrial buildings like mines, for example, won't produce much Work, diverting the residents' labor instead to producing more of the associated resource. Conversely, houses with ready access to education, leisure, and shopping will quickly grow into wealthy suburbs and beyond, producing Skilled꧑ and Highly Skilled Work but consuming more Food.

Adjust Your Policies As Needed

cult of bacchus

Your city can pass or repeal one Policy every six months. Policies can significantly alter your buildings' input and output, allowing you to adjust for surplus and shortage as needed. Constructing more advanced government buildings unlocks more Policies.

The default hotkey to pass or repeal Policies is the J key, so you don't need to zoom in and hunt for your government buildings to access the interface.

Since most Policies have both a benefit and a drawback, it can be beneficial to pass laws in the short term and repeal them in six months to a year. The only restriction is the cooldown, so if a Polic♌y turns out to be a mistake you can easily fix it.

Build Small

iron mine and housing

As satisfying as it might be to plop down a huge block of buildings with a single click and drag, doing so will quickly eat into your resources, usually of Work or Food. If the initial cost doesn't deplete your reserves, the sudden increase in consumption can send shock waves through your economy.

Build up new districts incrementally, especially ones that take up a lot of space like housing and farms. This allows you to adjust your production elsewhere and prevent unexpected shortages. There's no time limit in Urbek, so nothing needs to be rushed.

Use The Empty Space Around Villas And Mansions

villa with surrounding fields

Villas and Mansions are necessary to take your city down the Path of Wealth. They provide a large amount of Happiness, but require a lot of space and their demanding landscaping requirements need an investment of Unskilled Work. Villas and Mansions must be more than five tiles away from any other residential building, including other Villas and Mansions. Their owners don't seem to care about other building types, though, so that empty space surrounding the homes can be put to good use.

Fields and Orchards are an excellent use of the land around high-roller homes. You can also place service buildings like football pitches on the outskirts of the five-tile buffer, providing their benefit to homes outside the radius. The only exception to this are buildings that cause Pollution, which will ca♈use the Villa or Mansionꦡ to downgrade.

Overproducing One Resource Means Wasting Another

too many executives

Ideally, you want every resource in your city to have a healthy but not excessive surplus. This allows you build what you need when you need it, but doesn't cause too much waste elsewhere in the production chain. If you're producing hundreds or even thousands of a resource each month and don't have anywhere for it to go, that means the resources being used to create that surplus are being wasted.

If you see one of your resources being produced in excessive amounts, either cut back on production or look for ways to re-invest it. For example, if you're producing too much Food, it's time to build more houses, and if you have too much unused Work of any type, it's time to find people some jobs. Alternately, you could pass a law that increases consumption of the overproduced resource, effectively converting it into something else with a single click.

Beware Of Pollution

warehouses cause suburban flight

Pollution is a necessary evil in Urbek. The industries you need to get advanced resources will inevitably produce Pollution, affecting the surrounding area. The biggest danger of Pollution is even a single point of it will change the housing within its radius.

Middle-class and wealthy homeowners will quickly move out if there is any Pollution near their neighborhood. In densely-populated areas, this turns the hou🧸ses into low-income Apartment Blocks. These produce a hefty amount of Unskilled Work, but driving out the suburbanites can cause your Skilled and High Skilled Work to decrease.

The best approach to Pollution is to designate a region of the map for industrial production and concentrate your Pollution buildings there. The best place for this is near natural iron deposits, as this is the only place on the map you can build Iron Mines.

Pick Your Path

productivity step one

In the early stages of the game, your choices will set your city down one of three Paths; the Path of Wealth, the Path of Productivity, and the Path of Leisure. Your chosen Path determines the map's victory conditions. Starting down each Path requires a fair investment of resources, but if you aren't careful you can inadvertently and permanently set yourself down an unintended Path.

The easiest Path to accidentally choose is the Path of Productivity, since players will naturally want a strong starting economy and will seek to exploit available resources right away. If you're hoping to earn your Wealth or Leisure star in a given biome, limit your Wood production to what is s🧜trictly necessary and try to get the required Villas or Parks in place quickly.
