Valheim is a game where you get to explore a vast procedurally generated purgatory made up of different biomes. Each biome has its own resources, aggressive creatures, weather, and bosses, so to fully experience everything Valheim has to offer, you'll need to explore them all. While each world seed in Valheim is vastly different, generally, you'll spawn on an island that has one or two biomes in it. This pushes you to explore around and, since each piece of land is divided by the ocean biome, you'll need to build a boat and learn how to sail.
There are only three types of vessels: Raft, Karve, and Longship. Since the Raft is the first one you can build, it is an excellent option to start out, but it won't hold up in the long run and shouldn't even qualify as a proper ship. 10 General Speed: Longship 🍸
The first thing that you should measure when comparing boats is their speed. Despite being larger and therefore heavier, its large sails make the Longship the fastest boat, generally speaking, reaching a speed of overꦏ nine meters per second if the sails are down with a tailwind. To put this in perspective, the Karve can go seven meters per second with a tailwind and sails down, but there is a very high risk that the boat can capsize due to the speed.

9 💖 Paddling Speed: Karve
As mentioned above, the Longship is usually the fastest. Still, without the power of its s๊ails and with the wind against it, the two ships are relatively even. Both have a similar paddling speed of a little more than three meters per second.
If you are in a world where there is water, but you don't need to traverse oceans frequently (or deal with windspeed), then the Karve is a simpler option. Rather than building the larger Longship, you can just build the Karve to do the same thing.
8 Storage: Longship 🔜
As well as being the fastest, the Longship also has the largest storage, with 18 slots available for all kinds of items that the player needs to transport through th🎶e sea. And the Karve? Well, that one only has four slots available.
These storage slots are especially useful if you🌜 are mining for ore and𒈔 other non-teleportable materials. Rather than doing several treks back to your base, you can just load up your Longship and set sail!

Just looking at the recipe for each one is enough to know that the Longship's materials are more difficult to get than those needed for the Karve. Still, both re🧸quire the player to have 🍨a Smelter beforehand.
In general, to craft the Karve, you just need access to the Black Forest. To make the Longship, on the other hand, you will need to visit the Swa🌸mp to get both Iron and Ancient Bark.
6 ⛎ Design: Longship
Althouꦿgh the Karve has its charm, no one can deny that the one with the best design is the Longship. The Longship has a striped sail, as well as unique, wood-carv🧜ed details.
On the front, you can find a serpent-like head, while the back has a wooden spiral, seemingly representing the serpent's tail. With these carvings, it can be implied that the Longship has the power and speed of the ocean monster while commanding a powerful presence.

Unfortunately, the ships that you build don't last forever; they all have a specific amount of durability. Pretty much every built thing in the game has durability, which can decrease by physical damage or rain.
Overall, the Longship has a durability of 1,000, while the Karve has a durability of just 500. The Longship is basically twice as strong and can🌊 weather hard treks across the ocean (or attacks from shorelines).
3 🐎 𝓰 Size: Longship
This attribute can be somewhat subjective, as there will surely be those of you who will prefer th💦e smaller ship, but if size matters, then the Longship wins by a long shot.
The Longship is the largest of the three ships currently available in the game, measuring 22m long x 6m wide, twice a Karve's size, which only has 10m long x 3m wide. With the Longship, you can store it in an equally impressive dock.
2 Multiplayer𒅌 Boat: Longship
If you are playing with others, then the Longship is the way to go. Not only does it have more storage, but it has more space for passengers. The Longship has one pilot seat, as well as four additional seats. Sitting isn't the only option though, as you can also hold fast to the mast, as well as the bow. There is no limit to people that can hold fast either, making for quite a comical sight.
The Karve, on the other hand, has two seats (in addition to the pilot seat), and you can only hold fast from the mast. In terms of standing room, the Longship is the winner as well. This is especi🙈ally helpful if you are coming into the shore a little too hot. Rather than crashing into the shoreline, you can make a sharp turn and then slow down.
