recently asked Steam Support whether sniffing the Steam Deck vent is safe or not (thanks ), explaining that while the whole vent sniffing thing is mo▨re of a meme than something that normal people typically do, they actually quite like the smell that comes out of the handheld. That question was met with a reply from a probably rather concerned customer support agent who advised against doing it for the safety of their health.
While Valve states that there "are no safety concerns" regarding people sniffing vent fumes, it would still rather owners didn't do it to avoid any potential health risks. It's highly likely that the smells coming out of your Steam Deck aren't poisonous in any way, as you'd hope Valve would test for that kind of thing, but huffing exhaust fumes probably isn't something that the company can actively encourage or foresaw becoming popular.
While there are no safety concerns with general usage, directly inhaling the device's vent fumes should be avoided. We understand that it may be a meme, but please refrain from this behaviour for the safety of your health.
While it's nice that Valve is concerned for the safety of Steam Deck owners, its polite telling off to all the vent sniffers out there probably won't kick any habits any time soon. Even the person that lodged the support ticket stated that they're "just going to keep doing it", which is a level of pettiness and blatant disregard for their own health that you can only sit back and admire.
