Nothing is funnier than when someone explains a joke to you, right? Well, even if that isn't the case, we thought it was worth highlighting some of video games' perfect puns and double entendres that are a stretch too far.

Some of these games are classics so engrained in the gaming zeitgeist that you probably don't even bat an eyelid at their subtle jokes. Others, on the other hand, are so groan-worthy they feel like something only your uncle would say in an unfunny birthday card.

20 Tuff E Nu🔜ff

Tuff E Nuff - Box Art and Gameplay

Tuff E Nuff was one of many fighting games that came out on the SNES seeking to capitalise on Street Fighter 2's popularity. Like a lot of Jaleco's output, the game felt like a pretty pale imitation of the games that inspired it, but at least they tried to come up with an eye-catching name.

However, while we do get it, the pun is pretty terrible. Yes, it sounds like the phrase "tough enough" but it's not like the villain of the game is called Tuff E. Nuff, in fact, those words never appear in-game outside of the background of the character select screen. Honestly, they should have stuck to the much cooler Japanese name of the game: Dead Dance.

19 Ballz

Ballz 3D - Box art and gameplay

Yep. Not too much explaining to do here. PF Magic made one of the few pseudo-3D gam🧜es on the SNES, Genesis, and 3DO, where the characters are made up of polygonal, you guessed it... spheres.

Thജe name is hardly a pun, but they sure did lean into it with the marketing campaign. No matter how questionable that idea might have been.

18 Mass Effect ꦰ

Mass Effect - Oringal box art and Legendary Edition

This classic video game series is iconic for many reasons, and its name is instantly recognisable. However, it doesn't go higher because it's up for debate whether or not its double-meaning name was actually intended or not.

Yes, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Mass Effect is named after the titular technology that allows most of the games' stories to take place, but it also highlights the series onus on player choice and impacting the direction of the narrative. When the first game was announced as the first in a trilogy where your choices would carry over from game to game, many scoffed, so maybe BioWare really wanted to drive the point home that your decisions mattered right from the get-go.

17 Alan Wake

This💜 pun only makes sen🐻se in the context of the game where the Stephen King-inspired author cannot get to sleep.

An author who signs his name as A. Wake.

16 ꦓ Carmageddon

You can't just mush two words together and call it wordplay. Those are just two words that happen to begin and end with the same vowel sound.

Next thing you know, we're just going to start rhyming when naming our car combat games and end up with something silly like "Thrill Kill"... Oh wait...

15 Bubsy In Claws Encounter Of The Furr♊ed K🍰ind

Bubsy In Claw Encounter of the Furred Kind - Box art and start screen

Bubsy has become a bit of a punchline in the video game industry over the years. There's no "but" to that, it's a reputation that is wholly earned.

Although, this tongue-twisting pun might be the close🤡st thing to a successful joke the bobcat has ever made. Does that count as a ෴compliment?

14 Wet

Wet - box art and gameplay

Considering the𒐪 rest of this Bethesda game is about as classy as the grindhouse movies that inspired it, we are not surprised that this vulgar double entendre was intentional.

13 🔯 Murdered: So🍌ul Suspect

Murdered Soul Suspect - Box art and gameplay

Nobody talks about Murdered anymore, but around the launch of the PS4, it was a pretty ambitious noir thriller where you played both the victim and poltergeist detective on the case. Sadly, despite the killer premise, the game ultimately wasn't received very well and was just very frustrating to play thanks to painfully slow stealth sections.

That said, it did give 💮us some properly morose humour with its them꧋atically relevant title.

12 🍷 Gꦦrabbed By The Ghoulies

grabbed by the ghoulies banner for xbox hardware list

We could be snide and bemoan how childish this game name is, but if we're honest with ourselves, a ten-year old would have found this wordplay hilarious.

Rare was certainly no stranger to punny writing in its heyday. In fact, the studio was so good at juvenile humour aimed at adults that it made a whole series around taking a charming platformer character and putting him in a crude world with Conker🐼.

11 Toki🍨: Going Ape Spit

Toki Going Ape Spit - Box art and gameplay

Back in the day, Nintendo had some of the most strict guidelines and policies for what could and couldn't appear in games on its platform. At the top of that list was cursing, as a result, its main competitor Sega published plenty of edgier content.

Sonic and his cool dude attitude is the obvious example, but even games like Toki tried to show off how it wasn't for kids by having a rare fecal-inspired name. Obviously, that name stuck in people's heads, since the series made an unlikely return in 2018, on what other platform, then the Nintendo Switch.
