6 ♋ Odin Sphere
Most wouldn't associate fairy tales and folklore with a side-scrolling beat 'em up game, but Odin Sphere broke that standard. This game has roots in many different myths and folklore such as Celtic mythology's pooka, hints of Sleeping Beauty, and many prominent characters from Norse mythos. However, the game's most prevalent ties come from a German story by the name of Der Ring des Nibelungen, or The Ring of Nibelung.
The two stories nearly mirror one another in both their plot and their characters. Gwyndolin, the Valkyrie princess of Odin Sphere's Ragnanival, represents The Ring of Niblelung's Brunnhilde while the game's Oswald is Siegfried. Both sets of characters have similar motivations and, in the case of Gwyndolin and Brunnhilde, both go through a similar arc for the sake of their love. For those that know of this German tale, guessing the outcome of these two lovers is an easy feat.

While it keeps the core game mechanics, the story completely separates itself from its counterparts. Instead of simply racing to stop the mad doctor, Sonic is, quite literally, thrown into the book of Arabian Nights. Th♈ere, his friends appear as iconic characters from the classic tales of this book and he even gains a sidekick based on the genie of the lamp. All of this coupled with music that has elements of Middle Eastern music creates an atmosphere that lets players feel as if they too have been sent to a storybook world.
3 Okami
Fairy tales are one of the few things that every culture has in common. In fact, many of the more widely known tales like Little Red Riding Hood or Rapunzel are found in numerous cultures. These stor🍬ies have evolved to keep up with the times. Changing the way they are told as well as the medium their story is✱ portrayed. One such example is the video game Okami.
For those acquainted with Japanese folklore, the protagonist's name is very familiar as she is the Japanese sun goddess, Amaterasu-omikami. While she is portrayed as a wolf, the markings on her body closely resemble how the goddess is depicted. What's more, many of the characters are based on Japanese folklore as well, making this game a melting pot of the numerous myths and stories of Japan.
2 The Path
The tale of Little Red Riding Hood is a deceptively dark story. A small child traveling alone in the woods to their grandmother's only to find that said grandmother has been devoured by a wolf? Horrifying. So horrifying in fact that numerous video games have taken this story and made it more so. The Path is such a game.
