- Using 30K Mechanicum in 40K depends on creativity and willingness to convert for matches.
The first thing on many players' minds when the new Warhammer 30K Mechanicum models were announced was, "how can we use these in 40K?" In fact, the debate got so heated it ignited 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:a civil war within the community.
While there are no direct equivalents between the Mechanicum and Mechanicus, there are a few ways you could utilise these cool new robots in your 40K matches, particularly with friends. If you're a tournament player, your conversions may need to be a little more rigorous, but the possibility is still there.
Why Do 40K Players Want New Units?
First, a little context. If you're new to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Warhammer, or to the , you may be confused as to why players want to use units that aren't listed in their Codex. The answer is simple.
if you're well-versed in Mechanicum/Mechanicus drama, feel free to skip the next four paragraphs. I won't hold it against you.
The Adeptus Mechanicus haven't been shown much love by 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Games Workshop in recent years. The 10th Edition Codex vied with Death Guard for the title of worst in the game and, while a recent FAQ has left the ru♈les✨ in a better position, there has been a distinct lack of models.
The new Codex brought with it the Skatros, a scout-cum-sniper standing on enormous stilts. While I thought the miniature was unfairly maligned and had a cool Mad Max vibe, the community unanimously decided it hated it. I get it, I'm a Mechanicus player myself, and it's not the most inspiring release, especially alongside such a substandard rulebook.
But grievances came to a head when the plastic Mechanicum models were announced. These cool new sculpts of 30K's exciting robots are exactly what fans have wanted for 40K Mechanicus for years, but Games Workshop quickly confirmed that the units wouldn't be getting 40K rules.
This is standard for the company. It wants every player to have to buy a different army for each system. An army that could bridge two systems - combined Ad Mech/Mechani🐓cum, for instance, or Chaos Daemons spanning 40K and Fantasy back in the day - means the company makes less money. But 40K players were still disappointed, and wanted to know whether they could somehow use Mechanicum units in their 40K forces.
Plastic 30K Mechanicum And 40K Mechanicus Size Comparisons
Overall, the 30K units are smaller than I expected. I initially intended to use the Thallax as Kataphron Breachers, but they're not big enough. My Kataphron, pictured, are slightly larger than the official models, but the Thallax is still dwarfed. A Thallax body on the Kataphron wheels could work, but at that point you may as well just use the Kataphron.
However, I think they may work as Sicaran Ruststalkers or Infiltrators. They're more heavily armoured and have a very different silhouette, but the size is about right. You'd need weapons swaps or arm swaps to make it work, and the Thallax will probably end up a little taller than regular Sicarans, but at least nobody can claim you're modelling for advantage.
I don't own any Mechanicus tanks, but from eyeballing it, the Triaros Armoured Conveyor looks to be a similar size to the Skorpius.
30K's Adsecularis Tech-Thralls are the easiest conversion. A simple weapon swap and you've got a slightly more zombie-like version of Ad Mech's Skitarii Vanguard or Rangers. You might want to do a head swap too in order to make the counts-as really clear, but it's not necessary.
Finally, we've got the Castellax. Again, I expected this to come in around Dreadnought size, but it's slightly smaller. Maybe I just remember the firstborn Dreadnoughts of yesteryear and scale creep has passed me by, but this robot might just work as a Kastelan. It's a little smaller than the regular kit (again, my conversions are slightly bigger than the official GW models), so you might want to pack out the joints with Green Stuff or model a taller scenic base to match the Kastelan's height, but I think it works. If you're opting for punchy Kastelans, you won't even need a weapon swap, but some Phosphor Cannons are probably necessary if you're building the shooty variant. The Castellax already has a third mechanical arm holding a third armament, though, so you don't even need to work the third gun in anywhere else.
Using the 30K Mechanicum as 40K Mechanicus is possible, but it'll take a little effort. Some models are easy weapon swaps, whereas others (looking at the Castellax) are more tenuous and will require significant conversion even for friendly matches.
But it all depends on your situation. If your gaming group regularly uses a tin of beans as a Dreadnought (we've all been there), you'll be grand. If you're trying to convince a Tournament Organiser that you're not trying to gain an unfair advantage, you'll have to work harder. But Warhammer's all about creativity, so get your hands on the kit yourself and see what you can build.
