A Little Bit Of History

To fully understand the Armies of the Imperium, we must first look at the origin of their namesake, the Imperium of Man. Thousands of years ago, The Emperor embarked on what was known as The Great Crusade, an expansion into space with the goal of finding lost human settlements and to bring all of the mankind under a single banner, through force where necessary. Lasting two hundred years, it was a great success, with the combined might of the 20 Space Marine legions and Imperial armies pushing back alien foes and reclaiming huma🎉n colonies from those who opposed. It also saw the finding of the o🌱riginal Primarchs, and his Space Marine Generals, whose seed had been scattered by the Chaos Gods.

The victory was short-lived as The Emperor was betrayed by his favored son, Horus, who had been corrupted by Chaos. This led to a period of time now know as The Horus Heresy and saw some of his Space Marine Legions become corrupted and join the defection. The war lasted seven years with the culminationꦚ happening aboard Horus’ ship, following the siege of The Imperial Palace. The Emperor was able to defeat Horus, but at great cost. His body defeated, The Emperor was interred into the Golden Throne, a life support system that has kept him alive ever since. The Emperor continues to direct his armies and maintains an ever-watchful eye.

Adeptus Astartes (Space Marines)

Space M✤arines are traditionally comprised of naturally strong and res♉ilient human males who are recruited from the worlds their Chapters watches over. They are then genetically modified using the gene-seed of their chapter and undertake rigorous training to become the elite warriors they are.

Some ღof the more well known Space Marine Chapters have their own codices with the Space Marine codex covering the main bulk who don’t. We’ll go into Space Marines in much more detail in later articles, but for now here is a list of some of the more popular and well known Space Marine Chapters: Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Dark Angels, etc…

Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard)

Often thought to play a lesser role than that of their Space Marine brothers, the Imperial Guard is in fact the primary fighting force in the Emperor's arsenal. Their origin can be t෴raced back to The Great Crusade and the Imperial Army. After the Horus Heresy, the Imperial Army was split into the Imperial Guard, which is responsible for the ground forces and the Imperial Navy, who are responsible for the fleet of warships.

The Imperial Guard are many in number, and while not as equipped as the Space Marines, whaꦇt they lack in equipment they gain in tenacity and courage. They defend The Imperium of Man on all fronts simultaneously. Typically fielding larger armies, their greater number eventually prevails, squashing rebellion and smashing their alien fo⛦es into the ground. The mainstay of the force is human, but other humanoid races loyal to the Emperor such as Ogryn and Ratlings are invaluable components. In addition to their troops, they have an impressive array of tanks and other field weaponry.

Adeptus Custodes

These elite soldiers are the personal guard of The Emperor himself. Charged with defending The Imperial Palace and the Golden Throne, they are primarily a defensive force due to the Edict of Restraint – a legal decree that stopped them from leaving their post. Following the formation of the Great Rift, A meeting between The Emperor, Gui༒lliman, and the Custodes saw the dissolution of the Edict and they are once again free to wage war on the undeserving.

Each member of the Custodes is a unique work of art and are ✃they considered scholars, artis🔜ans, and counselors. They do not see themselves as soldiers, despite the rigorous military and combat training. Instead they consider themselves as the Guardians of the Emperor.

Adeptus Mechanicus

The origins of Adeptus Mechanicus stretch back to the colonization of Mars. Mars became an empire in its own right, co-existing alongside Terra. However, during the Age𒁃 of Strife, like most of humanity, Mars struggled and almost died out. Had it not been for devotees of Cult Mechanicus, the planet would have succumbed to deadly radiation as the shields failed due to lack of maintenance, destroying much of the life on Mars. The devotees built shelters, oxygen generators, and food processors and scoured the planet for tech t🐲hat could be used. The survivors emerged stronger, becoming the Adeptus Mechanicus we know today.

Adepta Sororitas

Adepta Sororitas are a religious order and are considered the Daughters of the Emperor. They are an all-female order an𓆏d contain the military arm of the Ecclesiarchy, circumventing the Decree Passive that forbade it from having “men under arms.” The Sisters of Battle (or Orders Militant) are allowed to exist despite circumventing the spirit of the decree as it was recognized there w♏as a need for a military arm. They are often tasked with Wars of Faith, directly under the command of Ecclesiarch only. While there is sometimes crossover, between the Sisters of Battle and other armies of the Imperium, their intent should not be misunderstood.

There you have it, a primer on the Armies of the Imperium. Hopef🌠ully now, armed with a bit of knowledge, you can make a de💞cision on which army best suits you!
