168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is mixing the 40K universe with the boomer shooter for a game that is as accessible in its gameplay as it is inaccessible (for this 40K novice, at least) in its Proper Noun-studded story. I’ve never played any 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Warhammer games, but after 20 minutes hands-on with Boltgun at PAX East, I’👍m excited to make this my first exception.
During my time with the game at 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Focus Entertainment’s booth on the show floor, I played my way through two-and-a-half of the game’s 24 levels which will be spread across three chapters in the final game. The team at Auroch Digital is playing in the same sandbox as recent shooters like Dusk and Amid Evil, which are themselves drawing from the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:id Software-developed shooters o🥂f the ‘90s. Each level is packed with secrets and 🐭timers.
“We&rsquo𓂃;re vaguely hoping that people will get into ♎speedrunning it,” says Grant Stewart, Boltgun’s lead designer.
Before you get to shooting, there’s a cutscene that sets up what’s going on rendered in a pixelated art style, in which your Space Marine is gifted a floating, fiery skeleton with a red cyborg eye called Incommodus who speaks to you as you work your way through each level. I understand basically nothing about the story set up, but the 40K faithful will no doubt recogni𓆏ze names like “Ordo Malleus,” “Graia,” “Grimskull war,” and “Adeptus Mechanicus.”
The story’s newcomer unfriendliness runs in inverse correlation to how easy the game is to pick up and play. It takes a bit to get your first gun, the Relic Bolter, but in the meantime you have a mean arm-mounted chainsaw which you can use to reduce all the enemies in your path to red piles of gibs. As in games like Dusk and Doom, your character moves extremely quickly and gameplay involves lots of strafing to avoid visible bullets as they fly toward you. Health and ammo icons float along the ground and you simply need to walk over them to hoovꦉer them up.
The player character has a really great feeling of weight. Once you jump, you soar through the air with moonwalk floatiness but crash down with a screen shaking thud. It feels like an accurate🌳 representation of what it would be like to wear ex🤪tremely heavy armor in low g, and I spent most of the demo jumping everywhere I went regardless of whether I needed to or not. Missing a jump has minimal consequences — if you fall off an edge, you pick back up where you left off. Jumping has its time and place, though, as you can right click while pointing the cursor toward an enemy to zip to them with your chainsaw. The game’s great movement may help Auroch’s ambitions of building a speedrunning community become a reality.
There’s some great stuff in the levels, too. The second mission, Mountain Batteries, is named for massive cannons mounted above the clouds where you fight a huge amount of enemies on iron bridges. I also found an elevator shaft bathed in red light that seemed to go on forever. Fans of 40K’s aesthetic will find a lot to love in Auroch Digital’s translation of the game to the realm of heavily pixelated polygons when the game launches on 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC later this year.
