Surviving high-difficulty missions requires top-quality gear, so you'll need to spend your hard-earned resources on upgrades. Read on to find out everything you need to know about getting new and better equipment on the Mourningstar!

Updated January 22, 2023: We've added a video guide to this article to show you how to upgrade your gear in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.

How To Get New Weapons

Once you've finished a few missions with a new character, the first of the Mourningstar's services will become available to you. The Armoury Exchange, located on the left side of the Mourningstar hub, allows you to purchase weapons, cosmetics, and, eventually, Curios using the most common currency, Ordo Dockets.

As your character levels up, more weapon types appropriate to your class will become available at the Armoury Exchange. The available gear changes regularly, so if you don't see the item you're looking for, come back when the timer underneath the shop's inventory expires.

You'll occasionally receive a free weapon or curio after a successful mission. This doesn't always happen, and the item you get is random, but it beats paying for it!

Sire Melk's Requisitorium

At Level 11, you'll unlock access to Sire Melk's Requisitorium, which is immediately on your right whenever you return to the Mourningstar from a mission. Melk offers weekly challenges - completing them rewards you with a currency you can only spend at the Requisitorium.

If you don't think you can complete one or more of the weekly challenges, you can replace them. The first replacement each week is free, but any subsequent replacements will cost an increasing number of Ordo Dockets.

Melk offers high-rarity gear as a reward for completed challenges. These can be of purple or even orange rarity, but you'll need to grind heavily to earn enough points for them. Alternately, you can purchase a random weapon or curio from Melk for a fraction of the cost.

How To Upgrade Your Equipment

On the right side of the Mourningstar hub, you can speak with Tech-Priest Hadron at the Shrine Of The Omnissiah. The snarky cyborg will upgrade your gear if you bring her sufficient materials - namely, Plasteel and Diamantine. Both can be earned from successful missions, and you can also find small amounts as loot in the field. Diamantine is much rarer than Plasteel, but is required for high-level upgrades.

Upgrading a weapon does not change its stats, but instead adds a random Perk that enhances the weapon's overall capabilities. While you don't have any control over what Perk you get, a weapon will never get a Perk that it can't use; upgrades are, therefore, always a net positive, even if you didn't get the Perk you wanted.

Since Perks are randomly assigned when a weapon is upgraded, two weapons that were identical when you acquired them can end up wildly different after being fully empowered. Once you've settled on a preferred weapon type, it can be worth buying several to see which version ends up being the best.
