What Are Tyranids?

From the lowliest Hormagaunt to the shadow skulking Genestealers to the towering behemoths that are Carnifex, all these nightmare-spawned monstrosities and more share the same name: Tyranid. Named after Tyran Primus, the planet where they were first encountered by the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Imperium of Man, Tyranids are the perfect bꦦlend of directed evolution and genetic manipulation.

The vast majority of these chittering, chitin-covered creatures are mindless eating machines. But their innumerable numbers are controlled by a vast and sinister intelligence that links all of these creatures throughout the entire galaxy in a hive mind, and directs them with one purpose: to feed. They are as divꦏerse as they areꦐ deadly, with new variants and sub-species appearing constantly as their species can easily adapt and evolve themselves as a whole to survive any environment or create deadlier and more efficient strains.

Tyranid biology is deeply fascinating, and there is no one specific catch-all description for their species as it’s one that’s constantly changing and evolving. They absorb the DNA of the creatures they consume and then use it to alter themselves in directed evolution. They are an ever-changing force that can adapt, improve a🐼nd outlive even the most stubborn of Warhammer races.

An interesting fact is that Tyranids themselves on a genetic level are clones. When a larger, better version of something is created deep within the belly of a 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Hive Ship by a Norn Queen, the genetic details are then passed to other Queens through their psychic synaptic network, allowing other💫 Hives to immediately begin churning out en masse their own copies. All Tyranids are mostly born from a Norn Queen. These massive and rarely seen matriarchs are extremely deadly, and are able to rip apart an Astartes Death Squad with ease. They are psychically connected to every one of their children, making getting near one of them borderline impossible without extreme losses. When a planet is stripped of Biomass during an invasion, the subsequent nutrient-filled goop is fed to a Norn Queen, and using specialized genetic shredder organs, they’re able to dissect and rearrange the genetic sequences of entire worlds, adding them to the Tyranids DNA collection, allowing them to make bigger and badder🍌 beasties.

Young laid by a Norn Queen reach maturation at an extremely rapid rate, with a freshly created Tyranid more than capable of tearing someone limb from limb. But this extreme turnaround in reproduction does come with a massive downside; it requires phenomenal amounts of biomass and organic material necessary to create and feed all of these screeching space monsters. Unless the Hive is constantly on the move, stripping apart worlds and moving on, eventually they will starve to death.

Some War Marshals have used this t♏o their advantage by strategically bombing or cratering non-essential worlds the hive will pass by in o﷽rder to thin their numbers for a later purge, causing them to divert their path or starve them out.

Hierarchy

Tyranids are big believers in the idea of “There is no I in team.” In fact, they have no individuality at all. They’re a synaptic race, controlled as a whole and operating in extremely large swarms, with each individual creature devolving into a mindless uncontrollable monster should that vital control link be severed with the death of a Swarm Lord, Zoanthrope, or a nearby Norn Queen. At this point, they turn on anything, anyone, and each other, making them an easy target for other races to pick off from range.

To take a wide brush to it, Tyranid swarms, in general, are controlled by Synapse Creatures, variants with advanced minds that act as Psychic Hubs linked across an entire invasion fleet with each one controlling their local cluster in a co-ordinated cacophony of violence. These also extend the influence of a Norn Queen and the awareness of the species Hive Mind as a whole. The psychic imprint of this species is so vast in scale that it creates a phenomenon known🌼 as the "Shadoꦛw in the Warp," a phrase when heard aloud on an Imperial World is enough to send many running for the nearest Starport.

Invasion

A Tyranid invasion is a particularly brutal and merciless affair. They don't use tactics or hit key military installations with precision strike squads. Instead Tyranids prefer to use quantity rather than quality. Overwhel𒈔ming their enemy witꦜh the sheer density of their numbers is small beans for Tyranids, regardless of casualties, because every creature in the Hive Mind is just a single cell of a vast unfeeling organism.

When an invasion is going to begin, every living being in an entire Sector is going to know, and if they don't react in time it will be too late.

The Shadow In The Warp

When a Tyranid fleet approaches a world, they’re preceded by a huge smothering signal of psychic energy that disrupts communications between astropaths and prevents Warp travel. This blocks their prey's chance for escape, and more importantly, prevents them from calling for help.

It manifests itself in feelings of unease, fear, and panic in the denizens of a targeted world, and168澳洲幸运5开奖网: these😼 effects are magnified tenfold for Psykers. Their abilities are rendered inert as tapping into these otherworldy powers results in them being blasted by the sound of a billion alien minds scratching to get in, with most going losing their minds, uttering alien phrases in a language none understand, or collapsing on the spot dead if they dare to try to reach their minds out.

When the Sha𒁃dow of the Warp falls upon a planet, it’s already too late. The Swarm is never far behind and those that are st𒆙randed will have to fend for themselves until help arrives.

Tyranid invasions are not sudden; they’re patient and surprisingly well planned. It can often take decades or several generations before a world sees a hint of it being marked for devouring. Interestingly, Tyranids are not a vast marauding force going in random di✤rections. The paths of the immense fleet tendrils are carefully coordinated and directed towarℱds key targets that are lush with organic matter, ripe for the taking.

Initial infection of a world typically begins when a Vanguard strain such as a Lictor, Genestealer, or Drone Ship appears on a planet. They then erect a form of a Psychic Beacon which summons the fleet to a world if it’s suitable for harvesting. (Or in the case of the Genestealer, they form gigantic planet-spanning Xeno worshipping cults with the goal of using them to create a large enough Psychic Gestalt. This allows them to summon the fleet whilst also overthrowing the planet's rulers and damaging its defenses before reinforcements arrive from off-world.)

When the main Hive Fleet arrives, those poor souls that haven’t evacuated already must now put up their defenses against an unending tide making planetfall.

First, the skies blacken as gigantic Mycetic Spores descend, slamming into the ground and dis❀gorging their payload of Tyranid drones, ready for slaughter. Parasitic particles cloud the atmosphere, r༺aising the temperature and creating a hot-house effect as alien jungles grow almost instantly in what was once arid dust-bowls. The planet is quickly plunged in gigantic Vox-disrupting storms with twisted lightning and greasy scum-filled rain that’s filled with tiny parasites that worm their way inside the skin, dissolving victims from within.

Those not decayed by the rain or reduced to piles of bubbling goo by gently floating bulbous Spore Mines face a fight against an untiring, unending, and innumerable tide of tearing savage creatures that know no fear and seek only slaughter. Tyranid invasions are incredibly frightening and in the book Fall of Malvolian, it shows it can take only a few hours from an initial fleet arrival for even the strongest of Imperium defenses to fall.

Post-Invasion

After cities have been left in ruin and their occupants rendered into lumps of blood, bone, and meaty gristle, the great harvest begins. Swarms of Rippers, tiny spiked mouth devourers, spread across the land, eating all organic matter and biomass in sight, regurgitating it into large digestion pools that have formed on the planet's surface. This gene-rich soup is sucked up by towering ribbed fleshy pylons, the nutrients being taken onboard the orbiting Hive Ships, replenishing and feeding the ever-growing horde's numbers.

After the once✱-lush and life-filled planet is reduced to nothing more than a silent barren husk, the fleet moves back iꦗnto space, drifting on to the next world and the billions of poor souls within.

How To Defeat The Tyranids

To put it bluntly, you can’t. Tyranids are an inevitability in the galaxy, their tendrils reach far and wide, and the creatures within those floating arms are heavily armored, covered in spikes, and have jaws, claws, and scythe arms so sharp it can cleave 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:🗹the hardened armor of a Space Marine in two.

The smaller caste can be dealt with conventional weapons, but the larger lads with their thick hides can shrug off most weaponry that isn’t plasma-based, armor-piercing, or explosive tipped. Even then, with the advanced evolution of the Tyranids, some of the more advanced combat forms can heal from the most grievous of wounds almost instantaneously. With only sustained fire for hours able to slow their numbers a minuscule amount, Tyranids are an unstoppable tide that you’re better off running from than trying to fight.
