There are three classes to choose from, and each will offer varying skills, weapons, and tactics as you play. They may also impact which Pardner you want to bring along, and matching the playstyles can be important, so let's make sure you pick the right one for you.

Cow Puncher

West of Loathing Cow Puncher Combat

The Cow Puncher class is blunt - quite literally, you’ll focus on melee weaponry and your muscle stats. It’s all about how hard you can hit the enemy, and picking a mighty fine bashing tool with which to hit them. Skills in this class revolve around beefing yourself and allies up, and getting up close and pers🐲onal with your foes.

You’ll be a tank for damage in most situations, so it’s worth investing in the abilities that will allow you to hit hard and be hit harder. You will still have access to some ranged weaponry, but your primary focus and damage will be dealt at point-blank range. If youﷺ just want to get going and swi𓃲nging, then Cow Puncher will be the best fit for you.

Beanslinger

Perhaps you’re someone who enjoys playing as a wizard or a witch. After all, magic is a tempti✤ng skill to have in nearly any RPG. Luckily for you, West of Loathing offers the Beanslinger class - strange, yes, but 🦩can easily be one of the most powerful builds in the game. This c💃lass is all about casting, conjuring, and pretty much anything you can do with beans.

You can hit from afar with little worry for your own health, and send out a Bean Golem in times of hardship to do your bidding. Call down a blizzard upon your enemies and cause lasting damage to sway the tide of battle - and yes, this does just mean frozen beans flying about. With books you can discover later on, you are able to unlock a vast array of skills and abilities for your Beancraft - and♉ also cooking skills in general.

Snake Oiler

Finally, the Snake Oiler: this class will let you focus on basic ranged skills using a revolver, but will also call to play some alchemy. Potions and concoctions will serve you well here, allowing you to inflict status effects and debuffs on enemies, and then m✃ove in for the kill with your six-shooter.

There are plenty of skills for damaging enemies from afar, including some critical attacks - one of which is appropriately named Deadeye. The alchemy skills will allow you to affect enemies directly, such as reducing the enemies Moxie stat or damaging them with elemental skills. Similarly, you can craft various potions for your own use with materials you find, allowing you to buff yourself and allies for the day.

Which Class Should You Pick?

It all comes down to playstyle. West of Loathing’s🦂 classes sound a little odd, sure, but they follow suit with some pretty traditional syst☂ems.

  • The Cow Puncher is your Knight class, focusing on strength, hardship, and up-front combat.
  • The Beanslinger is your Mage class, with the ability to cast and conjure all manner of things.
  • The Snake Oiler is your Rogue class, working from a distance and using whatever they can to gain the upper hand.

You may generally have a good idea as to what sort of class you usually pick in other RPGs, and if you do - go with that one. The combat varies with each class you pick, but if you keep in mind just what each one comes down to, then you should have a preference right off the bat. Of course, you can always try out all three.

Can You Change Your Class?

Unfortunately, there is no way to change your class once it has been selected at the start of the game. Whichever of the three you choose will be the permanent class for your character, as will the skills and abilities alongside it. There are extras you can dip into, such as Necro skills, but the core class will remain the same.

Luckily, the game does feature a short opening that takes you through The Town of Boring Springs - something of a tutorial and trial early on. You’ll get a feel for the game pretty quickly, going from location to location, dipping in and out of combat, and plenty of dialogue choices. So, if you want to change your class, it’s best to decide before departing from this opening location.
