If you want to take down the Onyxshard, you'll need to prepare accordingly. Below, we'll take a look at the Onyxshard's strengths and weaknesses, the best equipment to use, and some strategies for fighting it.

Onyxshard - Strengths And Weaknesses

  • Attribute - Earth
  • Soft Parts - Head
  • Attribute Weaknesses - Wood, Wind
  • Ailment Weaknesses - Poison, Fatigued, Frozen, Entangled
  • Attribute Resistances - Fire, Earth
  • Ailment Resistances - Ablaze
  • Physical Effectiveness - Pummel, Lunge

The Onyxshard is an Earth attribute Kemono that is weakest to Wood and Wind attacks. Protective crystals cover the Kemono's back, making attacks to this body part take heavily reduced damage. However, the Onyxshard's head takes a decent amount of damage, with its tail and hind legs making good second opti💛ons.

The Onyxshard takes the꧟ most damage from Pummel and Lunge weapon types, like the Mauler and Bow.

The Poison, Fatigue, Frozen, and Entangled ailments have moderate effectiveness against the Onyxshard. While not outstanding, these ailments may have some success during the hunt. Meanwhile, the Ablaze ailment and the Fire and Earth attributes are entirely negated, so avoid usi𒈔ng weapons or skills with these effects.

Best Equipment To Fight Onyxshard

The Myotara armor set is a great choice for this fight, thanks to its high overall defense and above-average Earth attribute defense. This set has some decent skills as well, but for an even more defensive setup, you may want to mix in some Great Juniper armor pieces for skills like Health Boost or Strong Arm: Remedy.

A Wood or Wind attribute weapon will deal the most damage to the Onyxshard, so be 𓆉sure to craft one of these to maximize your damage output and get the hunt over with faster. Anything in the Fumebeak, Dreadclaw, or Ra꧟getail lines will work well.

Be sure to bring the Crate, Spring, and Glider Karakuri to this fight. The Spring Wall Fusion Karakuri can be conjured using a Crate, Spring, Crate combo, and can help deflect the Onyxshard's enraged roll attack. Additionally, a Crate, Glider, Crate combo will create an Elemental Lantern Karakuri, which can help defend against the Onyxshard's high-damage Earth attacks.

Onyxshard - Fight Breakdown And Moves

onyxshard starting at the hunter up close

The Onyxshard will use similar attacks to the Goldshard, but often uses its attacks multiple times in a row. When you see the Onyxshard using a short, low-power attack, assume that it will follow up with the same attack again. Overall, the Onyxshard uses more Earth attribute attacks than the Goldshard, making the Elemental Lantern and Earth defense armor more useful.

The Onyxshard will often attack by launching waves of its crystals to the front or back. Because of this, the safest place to be is usually near its sides, although the Kemono has several attacks that occasionally target these areas as well. The Onyxshard's crystal waves can be intimidating, but once you learn where they land, they can be dodged with ease.

When the Onyxshard jumps back a short distance or moves away to reposition, it will most likely attack with a crystal wave, so get ready to move away from the front of the Kemono to avoid it. The Onyxshard may also quickly fire a wave of crystals before leaping to the side, repeating this process three to four times. Get close to the Kemono and move along with it to avoid each wave.

Similar to the Goldshard, the Onyxshard will curl into a ball before rolling at high speed toward you, dealing damage along its path. This attack is most often used when the Onyxshard is a fair distance away from you, or immediately after one of its other attacks. In either case, dodging out of the way at just the right time will let you avoid this attack while remaining close enough to the Kemono to deal some damage to it while it recovers from the roll.

One of the Onyxshard's easier attacks to dodge is its double back-slam. The Kemono will lay on its side before sliding forward, attacking with its spikes. The Onyxshard doesn't move too much during this attack, meaning you can avoid it by simply running a bit of distance away. Alternatively, if you can get to the other side of the Kemono, you🅘 have a few free seconds to att꧑ack while it moves.

If the Onyxshard slaps the ground a few times with its front paws, it will then create an earth spike beneath you, twice. These can be easily avoided by dodging out of the way or simply running away from the earth spike. If you are behind the Onyxshard after the second spike, it will follow up with a roll attack, so be prepared to dodge this, or move away from its bac🧜k beforehand.

Occasionally, the Onyxshard will slam both of its front paws down at the same time, creating a ring of earth spikes around itself, dealing damage. Then, it will jump into the air while moving toward you before slamming down with the crystals on its back, dealing high damage in the area. This attack is very dangerous but can be avoided using a Spring Karakuri or dodging at the right time. Be sure to stay close to the Kemono after, however, as it has a lengthy recovery time during which you can counterattack.

dealing the finishing blow to the onyxshard

After the Onyxshard has taken enough damage, it will enrage, blasting the area around itself in massive earth spikes. While enraged, the Onyxshard's crystals will glow red, and several of its attacks will be stronger.

While enraged, the Onyxshard's crystal wave attacks will deal more damage over a larger area. Be especially careful when dodging these, as they can be deadly. Remember to stay near the sides of the Kemono for your best chances at avoiding its crystals.

The Onyxshard may also create rings of earth spikes around itself twice, before jumping into the air and performing its crystal back-slam. This attack does even more damage when the Onyxshard is enraged, so take care when dodging it. However, the Kemono will also need to recover for longer than normal after this attack, so take this time to deal📖 some damage.

The Onyxshard's roll attack is also more powerful when enraged. Now, the Onyxshard will spin up for a moment before charging forward, dealing damage as it moves toward you. However, this increased speed means the Onyxshard is more susceptible to being countered, specifically with the Spring Wall Karakuri. By conjuring this Karakuri in front of the rolling Onyxshard, you can fling it into the air, knocking it down for a while. Use the Spring Wall Karakuri to ওturn this dangerous attack into a great opportunity.
