As I walkedꦺ my first steไps through Azuma, I started noticing many similarities to those other games, but the sense of familiarity quickly faded as I found myself enveloped in the interesting and interactive world before me.
The land of Azuma is presented to you with the city of Minato as a central point and hub, where you can grab new side quests, craft weapons, and rest after a hunt. Outside the city, you will be able to travel to five huge areas with different ecosystems, either to explore the areas themselves or to set off on specific hunting missions. But these aren't just plain sandboxes where you go to rip and tear into some weird animals. You will find labyrinthine passages and breakable walls, several ruined castles that you can climb or break into to discover lost secrets, and landmarks of glorious times long gone that will help you to get your bearings before starting your hunt.
As you advance through the story, you will see Azuma affected by abnormal situations and seasonal changes, which helps the world to feel alive and gives yoꦜu a richer sense of progression. New places to explore even emerge in some cases. Though as vibrant as the world can feel, it pales in comparison to the star of the show - the Karakuri System.
The Karakuri is a small device that stores materials from the wild to build devices and constructs of different uses, not dissimilar to what Fortnite has (yes, I know, but bear with me for a second). Unlike Fortnite’s system, however, it’s focused on both combat and facilitating transportation and exploration across the open-world maps. From a wire that can help you cross a broken bridge, to fireworks, to bombs you can use to stun enemies in combat, this system has such a variety of forms and shapes that it’s only really limited by your imagination. Every Karakuri๊ device you build remains in the map until you destroy it, and NPCs will interact with them, adding more depth to that feeling of interactivity within the world of Azuma.
As is usual🅠 with hunting games, monsters plague the areas, leaving your unfortunate self with the task of killing them in combat. These monsters, called Kemono, can come in smaller or larger sizes, and each one disp♏lays different behavior, techniques, and combat strategies. However, one of the best aspects of Wild Hearts’ Kemono is that they all feel unique in conduct and overall battle choreography, which is unusual compared to other hunting games, where variants of the same monsters display similar behavior. In Wild Hearts, regardless of whether they’re entirely new or a subspecies of another Kemono, you will discover a different and harder battle each time, and every enemy has its own personality and intricacies for you to figure out.
To fight the Kemono, you ♍will need an arsenal that can be up to the task, and you will find it in the eight different weapon categories this game has. Most of the weapons interact directly with the Karakuri constructs in different ways, significantly altering your approach to combat depending on what you want to combine or what kind of monster you’re facing. From using trampolines to realize aerial maneuvers, to shooting at monsters while you glide above them, and 🐻even applying fire to your weapons to inflict further damage to them, these interactions solidify the Karakuri system and its importance across the gameplay.
On the performance side, the game could benefit from an update or two. There are the occasional hiccups and frame drops, and sometimes it can get difficult to see anything in t🅺he middle of a snowstorm. Narratively I suppose that makes sense, but it’s no less bothersome because of that. Having some frames dropping here and there can complicate things in a game as dynamic as this, so hopefully, those aspects of the game can get a proper polish to improve the experience.
Ultimately, Wild Hearts shows up as a colorful and curious contender in the hunting game genre, and a very welcome one right now. With games like Monster Hunter Rise going for a less challenging approach, this game brings fascinating ideas that make it the breath of fresh air that the genre needs, combining difficult battles with some twists in mobility and construction, in a completely unexpected f꧃ashion. Some improvements to the unfortunate performance issues are needed, but the overall experience isn’t less enjoyable because of them.
