Afterward, Emhyr married Pavetta, and through their union, Cirilla was born. What many may not realize is that this hedgehog-headed knight was actually Emhyr suffering from a curse that his own people cast on him. He then came in his own ꦜand destroyed all those that previously betrayed him, but this now fearsome Emperor did have a time where he was more honorable and had a much more... freakish appearance, even if it was a farce.
9 ꦐ He Wants Toꦰ Get Way Too Close To Cirilla
It's never directly ꧋said during the games as CD Projekt has actively avoided adapting this part of Emhyr's personality from the books. Still, it's important for fans who see Emhyr as this well-meaning🍸 monster to actually understand where his motivations are rooted. Emhyr wants to stop Ithlinne's Prophecy, the one that basically says the Wild Hunt will end mankind but Ciri of the Elder Blood will survive. Somehow, Emhyr gets it into his head that all he needs to do is conquer the free world, make a baby with his own child, and raise that baby to fight and beat the Wild Hunt. That's right, Emhyr's plan (in the books) is to..."be" with his daughter. How disgusting.
8 🅠 He Settles For His Daughter's Imposter
And if that wasn't twisted enough, let's get into the whole "Fake Ciri" thing. After Ciri escaped the Cintra raid as a child, Emhyr decided it would be a good idea to keep the populace unaware of her freedom, so instead, he took a noble girl from her family who l𓆏ooked remotely like Ciri and made her play the part.
This girl acted as if she was Cirilla for years and years, and Emhyr always treated her with kindness, likely out of pity, but in the books Emhyr eventually marries this girl. 7 He Had A Com🧸plet🌠e Change Of Heart, But Not In The Games
It should be made clear that the games exists in their own canon, separate from both the books and the Netflix adaptation. Emhyr is a very different person by the end of the books. He actually has a complete change of heart and allows Ciri to stay with her surrogate parents, Geralt and Yennefer. From everything we've seen of Emhyr in the third game, as well as in supplementary material, o🎀ne would think that this all-powerful Emperor was well-loved by his people. And, he was, by those who benefitted from him directly. But for the rest of the nobles and a good portion of the civilian population, Emhyr is a man who wasted much of their resou🎶rces on a long and unprovoked war. Remember that the Nilfgaardians in the capital are pretty elitist, thinking themselves the true descendants of the Elder Blood.
A war that would bring thousands of gross peasants into the fold as official "Nilfgaardians" is not something they would have ever🍸 asked for.
5 ꩲThe Backstory Behind His Biggest Title
Emhyr has quite a few titles, but at least he's not as bad as Khaleesi. Still, his most well-known alias is Emhyr "Deithwen Addan Yn Carn Aep Morvudd" Van Emreis. This is of cജourse in the Nilfgaardian language but translates roughly to "The White Flame Dancing On The Barrows Of His Enemies." But, what does this even mean? Well, it'sꦜ confirmed in a codex entry that once Emhyr had finally fought his way onto the throne and became Emperor, he had all of his political enemies disinterred and paved his ballroom with their gravestones. So quite literally, the guy dances on the graves of those who betrayed him.
4 He Has A😼 Soft Spot For Geralt 🌞
You might think that Witchers would do well under the Nilfgaardian banner since the other Elder Races seem to be treated better there, but you'd be wrong. Nilfgaard is very wary of magic, and even more so of genetic experiments like Witchers. Sure, Emhyr made a deal with Letho in TW2: Assassin Of Kings, but the guy immediately betrayed the School Of The Viper Witcher as soon as he possibly could. Yet he always se🙈ems so forgiving with Geralt. Why is that? Well, for one Geralt saved his life when he was Duny, but he also recognizes Cirilla's importance.
3 He's A Monster, But Not A 𝄹Heartless One
We dived into it a tad earlier, but Emhyr actually has a much more♎ humanitarian goal than one would expect for a cold and calculating kilꩲler like him. It's revealed throughout the books that Emhyr wants to stop Ithlinne's Prophecy and defeat the Wild Hunt, and all of his decisions were made towards that end goal.
The terrifying part is he'll do anything to achieve those ꧂goals, no matter how dark or cruel. This is why he seems almost... human, and then we remember that he's betrayed everyone he's ever known to get here.
2 Anyone Who Finiꦉshes Th🌸eir Job Must Be Killed
More on what was said above, Emhyr isn't known to "keep" promises, but it's not like he loves the idea of murder. Simply p🐲ut, he just doesn't risk loose ends or people who could come back at him later. Still, he has moments of "kindness." Take "Fake Ciri" for example, he never even planned on killing her. Or what about his late wife, Pavetta, who we know he had no real love for? He understood how tragic her life now was because of him, and he planned to keep her comfortable for the rest of her days before the tragic accident that led to her demise. He even works with Temeria in a potential ending if you sold o🌳ut Roche and Ves to Dijkstra. To Emhyr, everything is a means to an end, but that doesn't mean he isn't human or humane.
1 While Elves Are Cool, Sorceresses &am𝓡p; Magic Are Not
Why is Nilfgaard so wary of Sorceresses and Mages? They seem to be on good terms with the elvers and other elder races, so why is magic such a no-go f💙or them? To be frank, it's not like they're treated any better in the north, what with Radovid's Witch Hunts and all. But it's important to remember Emhyr lived out a large portion of his younger life with a hedgehog head due to magic. Sure, it was his own family that cast it upon him, but Magic has played a huge part in all the worst aspects of his lif▨e.
