I guess you could describe my relationship with Pokemon Go as ‘on again, off again’. When I’m in it, I’m hardcore. I play every day, I max out my rewards, I coordinate raids, and I go to meetups. I’m a Pokemon Go guy. But when you play Go every day, like really play it,💧 the diminishing returns will eventu📖ally hit you like a brick wall.

Eventually, I get to a point where it feels like I’m just walking around tossing Poke Balls because that’s what I'm supposed to do, not because I want to. When my passion runs thin, I store away my incubators, throw all my pinap berries in the freezer, and take a long break. After enough time has passed, I eventually hear the call to catch ‘em all again, and I always answer.

Today I booted up Pokemon Go for the first time in a long time, ready to dive back in and see all the new things I’ve missed out on. The benefit of taking a toler🐷ance break for PGO is when you come back, a lot will have changed. Loading in, I found myself꧋ surrounded by packs of Gen 9 Pokemon. My Pokedex filled with new entries in quick succession: Sprigatito, Lechonk, Pawmi, I scooped ‘em all up. Then to my surprise, a Shiny Dragonite appeared on my screen. Nervously, carefully, I tossed a perfectly curved Ultra Ball and locked it down, a triumphant return to one of my favorite mobile games.

Pokemon Go is ꦜa shadow of its former self, but playing on holiday is 🐼still great fun

Except it wasn’t a Shiny Dragonite, it was a Zorua in disguise. Crestfallen, I experienced a familiar feeling of anguish that Pokemon Go has given me many times before. Failing to capture Mewtwo after a difficult raid battle. Finding a Shiny Charizard in the park and then watching it run away when AR briefly glitched out. Whiffing my fourth consecutive excellent throw research task over, and over, and over. Pokemon Go has kicked me in the junk countless times, and on this replay it was𒊎ted no tiౠme at all reminding me what disappointment feels like.

I tried to take my mind off of it by spinning a nearby Poke Stop, only to find out I’d left my bag full. Despite being upgraded to 520 slots, it’s somehow perpetually full, and at this point I’m certain that no matter how much space I have, I’ll just find a way to fill it. Suddenly my reintroduction to the game is agonizing inventory management, trying to decide which pile of berries♋ and lures I can stand to throw in the garbage. I nearly closed the app and restart꧒ed the clock on my break. This is not my idea of fun.

Pokemon GO - in-game store

There’s a lot of cool new features that have been added to Go recently. Sinc♕e I last played, Campfire has been fully integrated into the app. There’s a new social system called Party Play that lets you see nearby trainers in your game and complete challenges alongside them. One of the coolest new features is routes, a way to follow paths created by others trained to generate extra Pokemon spawns and earn some bonus rewards.

All of those things add to the depth of the game and make me excited to get playing again, but they’re also a bunch of things piled on top of an already bloated UI and play experience. I’m a hardcore Pokemon Go veteran and I find engaging w🌺ith all of its systems to be overwhelming, I can’t imagine how new and casual players must feel about the game at this point. Who has time to complete all the local routes in their area when there’s so much inventory maintenance to do?

I know the Pokemon Go community likes to complain about the game. Part of the reason I took my most recent break was because I was tired of all the nice pandemic-era conveniences getting stripped away, and watching the prices of items in the shop continually go up. Part of me is excited to dive back in and start filling out my Pokedex again, but another part of me can already feel how daunting this game can be when you’re really in it. Maybe I just need to start over with a clean slate, but it took me years to get to level 40, and I can’t bear to start over completely. Plus, 400 Ultra Balls don’t grow on trees y’know. It’s a shame I have to delete 100 of them so I🔥 can spin Poke Stop signs while completing my next route, but I guess that’s just the game these days.
