A Kingdom Hearts reference has been spotted wi🏅thin The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse.
Despite the fact that Disney owns the rights to Kingdom Hearts, it very rarely makes use of it outside of official Kingdom Hearts releases and the occasional bit of merchandise, and it certainly doesn't like to cross the streams between official Disney releases and Kingdom Hearts. The biggest example of it doing this is probably when they had a Sora mascot at Disney World back when the original game released.
You can now add one more rare example of a Disney-approved Kingdom Hearts reference thanks to the Spring special for The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse. The Spring special features Mickey and Minnie trying to do some spring-cleaning, which Mickey struggles with as an apparent item hoarder. , one scene in the special has Minnie carrying the Kingdom Key D in a box alongside the Fantasia Sorcerer's hat and a Mickey Mouse hat.
The discovery quickly went viral after the special aired, which is a testament to how ra♐rely King🍸dom Hearts references pop up in anything outside of gaming. that allowed the Keyblade to be included.
In a response to a Tweet showing the easter egg off, mbrleigh Tweeted her own storyboard, saying, "I’d like to thank the Mickey Mouse crew for whoever let me get away with this, happy almost 20th anniversary KH. She then shared another earlier storyboard which has the word "Keyblade!" written on it to make sure it's clear what it is, saying, "yknow, just in case they didn’t know what it was I wrote it in the margins. i owe whoever designed it and kept it in my LIFE".
Although it might seem like perfect timing considering we're just days away from the 20th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts, the storyboards were apparently completed back in November 2020, so it's more of a happy coincidence than anything else.
