Horror games are played for their adrenaline-inducing experiences. They bring some thrill to the hum-drum of ordinary life and force us to confront ideas and monsters greater than ourselves. Although boss e🧔ncounters are not necessary to complete a horror experience, good ones can stick in the minds of a player and have them remember the terror for years.
Bad boss encounters are the opposite. Horror is one of the hardest genres to pull off𝓰 correctly. As such, if a boss is not on the mark, they can feel boring or campy instead of tense and scary.
10 🐬 Celestial Emissary

The Celestial Emissary is made up of a gaggle of little aliens that will infinitely respawn. One is unique and will trigger a boss meter when hit. Eventually, it will grow slightly larger than the rest and will try to rely on its entourage to collapse on you to do damage. It has very little health, and many players will no🐼t even take damage in this fight. To add insult to injury, this glorified miniboss is classed as a Great One by them game, which are meant to be the strongest baddies in the nightmare world.
9 💖 Bed of ♕Chaos

Demon Souls features a number o💫f bosses that cannot retaliate to the player in any way. They simply lay and take punishment until killed.
Dark Souls' Bed of Chaos has two large sweeping arms that can knock the player down and brush them off cliffs, killing them instantly. To kill the boss, you have to destroy a sac on either arm. With this done, you then have to make a perilous jump across a cliff as the arena collapses around them. If you can manage to make the jump while still dodging the arms, you can kill the Bed of Chaos, a pathetic bug that takes one hit to kill.
8 The Slug
Dead Space is one of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the most horrifying experiences in gaming history. You never know when or where you will be ꦛattacked at a given moment. The game is as mu🌜ch a battle with yourself to move forward as it is against the Necromorphs.
The Slug is basically a giant ball of flesh that attached itself to the hull of the Ishimura. In order to kill it, Isaac Clarke has to commandeer a giant space cannon. The reason this encounter fails so spectacularly is that it's one of the only sequences in the game where Isaac is totally safe. Nothing can sneak up from behind and the front is guarded by space-grade glass. The whole showdown feels like a modern version of Asteroids, rather than a survival situation.
7 Scarlet
Silent Hill: Homecoming is better than it was given credit for, but one part of the game that doesn't hold up so well is the boss fight against Scarlet, who is a giant doll that attacks the player.
That is its only gimmick. Sc🍬arlet looks less like a cursed doll and more like a rejected clothing mannequin. She scuttles after the player in an unnerving posture like that of a spider, but once the shock wears off, the boss fight is rather bland. You just have to hit her multiple times with a weapon while she tries, in vain, to attack you. When she manages to land a hit, the damage is much le𒉰ss than you would anticipate. Add to this that the boss music sounds like something straight from a 2001 EDM club and you have a very surreal, but not scary fight to deal with.
6 Alighiero
Alighiero is the main character's father in Dante's Inferno and serves as the final boss of Greed. The first thing that is disappointing about this boss fight, is that up until Alighiero, all the bosses have either been mythical creatures or very prominent historical figures. Then it's just... dad.
While disappointing, it makes sense that Dante may have to face his father in Hell. What doesn't make sense is the implementation of this boss fight. It takes place on a tiny platform for the sole purpose of making daddy dearest's lame AOE attacks actually capable of hitting Dante. The fight is a slog, and Alighiero only has access to four different attacks.
5 Dracula
The SNES title Castlevania: Dracula X suffers from the same illness that many other early games did. Back in the day, developers thought that difficulty meant th🎀e same thing as the time it takes to complete a task.
In this case, the final boss, Dracula, has a massive health pool and not much else. He can only use one move, and that is to shoot fireballs, then teleport away. Since he teleports, he can only be hit once when he appears, making the encounter last even longer. The worst part of the fight is that it takes place on small platforms, and if you fall, it's instant death.
4 Wendigo
Until Dawn was a refreshing take on the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure genre. That said, the game isn't exactly tailored to boss encounters. Not to be deterred, the developers decided to put one in anyway.
The entire boss fight is made up of Quick Time Events. If that doesn't sound exhilarating enough, over half of these QTEs are keeping the controller perfectly still. This means that simply putting the controller down can bypass most of the encounter. Did I mention that if one of them is missed, it counts as permadeath that cannot be reversed until you play the entire game through again?
3 Butcher
Hunt: Showdown is one of the few options players have for a multiplayer horror experience. It's a great way to connect with friends, but the real threat in the game is other players. Because of this, bosses are less of a focus than they should be.
The Butcher is a sad encounter. It is slow-moving with many weaknesses, making it easy to kill on your own, not to mention in a party of three. The Butcher isn't a terrible boss, but compared to other horrors like the Spider or the Assassin, seeing this pig-head as your target is sure to make you groan.
2 ꧑ 💖 The Shambler
Call of Cthulhu tries its best to be an investigative horror game. When dealing with inter-dimensional horrors it is be꧅st to either only allow the player to flee from a boss, or put them on equal footing and have them duke it out.
This game tries to do something in between with under꧒whelming results. The Shambler is the only boss in the game and can be defeated by solving a stealth puzzle. The encounter is somewhat anxiety-inducing but the huge buildup to the massive presence of Cthulhu, only to not be able to interact with him at all makes this boss encounter all the more disappointing.
