Odds are you had never heard of a CMOS battery, or clock battery as they are sometimes called, before 2021. They have been a hot topic of conversation in 2021, though. Consoles include a CMOS battery and after enough time has passed, that battery will eventually die. While the battery can be replaced, the console will then need to connect to its respective servers for authentication. The purpose of the battery is to keep the console's internal clock, which is used to timestamp when you unlock trophies and that sort of thing, on time.

The problem is, if that console's servers have been taken down by the time its CMOS dies, which is incredibly likely, there will be no way to authenticate the battery. That will effectively render the console obsolete, turning it into little more than an expensive paperweight with fancy lights. While 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:PlayStation has had to bear the brunt of most of this year's CMOS talk, it's very likely Xbox will be affected by the issue too.

That seems to have been confirmed by Xbox boss Phil Spencer who addressed the issue during an interview with Axios's Stephen Totilo. “The hardware team is hearing the message about our consoles should... allow for the ongoing relationship between the player and the content that they own,” Spencer said, adding that a team is working on a fix.

The first console to have its CMOS 🌳issue flagged was the PS4. Owners of the last-gen console stripped it down, removed the battery, and tested various games to see what would happen. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The same has been done with the PS5 and as people feared, for the most part, the lack of a working CMOS battery means most games don't work on either console.

PlayStation has since rolled out patches on both consoles that seem to have fixed the issue. The latest testing on a PS5 without a CMOS battery confirms that it will now be able to play both physical and digital copies of games 16♉8澳洲幸运5开奖网:whether it has a working clock battery or not. The only exception is PS Plus titles which will remain unplayable without it. In fairness, that's to be expected. No CMOS battery means no internet connection, and PS Plus games can't be played without an active subscription, battery or no battery.
